Holy Hip Hop

One of my quirky hobbies is writing raps for Vacation Bible School and Summer Camp each year.  Below are few of my church rhymes--feel free to adapt for use with your Sunday School, Youth Group, or campers!

Parables

[Let me tell you 'bout a gift that's already yours
It's a kinda gift you won't be findin' in stores
A present given to you before you were born
It's yours for when you're happy and yours for when ya mourn.

It's a treasure-like gold.
It's ancient-like old.
A mystery to ponder, a puzzle to hold
sometimes it's like a door that can shut and open
the questions keep you comin' back again and again

I wonder...
Could it be a parable?
A PaPaPa Parable?
You ready for a parable? A'right!]

Well once upon a time there was a someone
who liked to tell stories 'bout a kingdom
But stories 'bout the kingdom made people's heads whirl
It was unlike any kingdom you find in this world

When people asked 'bout the kingdom he said,
“The kingdom is like: someone who makes bread”

Mix up the flour in a bowl and then
hide in the mix a pinch of leaven

It bubbles and swells then puffs up some more
into a big loaf like you buy at the store
[Let me tell you 'bout a gift that's already yours
It's a kinda gift you won't be findin' in stores
A present given to you before you were born
It's yours for when you're happy and yours for when ya mourn.

A Traveler was on the road to the city
when robbers attacked and showed him no pity
They robbed him, they hurt him, they left him half dead
“Will anybody help?” the Traveler said

Here comes the priest, will he help? No.
How 'bout the Levite? No, he's gotta go.
Then a Stranger comes from far away.
The Stranger stops and the Stranger stays

To help the Traveler who is hurt
some medicine, some money, and a new shirt
So who was the Neighbor? What do you say?
Can a Neighbor be a Stranger from far away?

This parable's about a Shepherd who's good
he leads the sheep 'round the whole neighborhood
to the good green grass and the water clear
in places of danger the Shepherd stays near

and when the wolf comes the Good Shepherd will stay
though the ordinary shepherds all run away
and in the dark night his promise he'll keep
and even lay down his life for the sheep

he leads the sheep home and he looks for the lost
and cares for the sheep whatever the cost
when everyone's home, from the great to the least
one shepherd, one flock will share a great feast.

Hebrew Scriptures

[F-O-G
You and me
We're the St. Gregory’s FOG-
That's “Friends of God”!]

Well God's Friend Noah was on a walk
See, Noah & God, they'd walk and talk
God said it was time to send the rain
To wash the world, make it new again

So Noah and his family built a boat
And when the rains came they stayed afloat
With the animals from all the earth
They floated and they waited for earth's rebirth

At last a dove came with a leaf
The flood was finally over. What a relief!
God set a rainbow in the sky
It's a promise –on that we can rely
[F-O-G
You and me
We're the St. Gregory’s FOG-
That's “Friends of God”!]

The first gift of God was in Creation
A gift for every single person, every nation
Darkness, Light; Water, Sky,
Land & Green Growing Things—Growing High!

Then God gave us the Day & Night
The fish that swim and the birds in flight
Things that crawl and walk, then you & me
Then the very best gift came finally---
(REST.... ZZZZZZ....)
[F-O-G
You and me
We're the St. Gregory’s FOG-
That's “Friends of God”!]

The desert is a dangerous place
You never know what you're gonna face
Some people of God took a desert hike
and wondered what the new place would be like

They traveled from Ur to Haran and then
At Haran God said “move on to Canaan”
To Shechem, then Bethel, and on you see
To Hebron to make a home near the trees

It was sure a long trip—those people weren't lazy!
Then God made a promise... it was totally crazy...
God promised a baby—they were too old!--so after
the baby was born they just named him “laughter”
(Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha)

So Abraham and Sarah had a child, you see,
And that was the start of the Great Family
That stretched across the years, the land and sea
And now it stretches to include you and me

Hufflepuff Verse (House Cup Winners, 2018)
This house is so hardworking, patient, loyal and just
They’re sociable with everyone, all Hogwarts really must
Give them due respect, they shine bright yellow like the sun
Put their heart into their work and just don’t stop until it’s done
